Buying Back Time: How AI Unlocked the Projects I Never Had Time to Build

The bottleneck was never ambition—it was time. How AI shifts the math from tedious mechanical drag to high-leverage building and craft.

There is a big difference between what you are capable of building and what you actually have the time to build.

For years, the real bottleneck was never ambition—it was friction. Relearning old idiosyncrasies in legacy codebases, fighting clunky build configurations, or writing endless glue scripts just to get a prototype off the ground meant great ideas often faded in the backlog before they ever had a chance.

AI changed that math. Not by thinking for me, but by buying back my time.

Unlocking the Backlog

Over the past year, that shift unlocked projects I never would have justified starting:

  • Rebuilding a Heavy Statistical Engine: Modernizing a legacy scientific computing system into Rust so it could run fast, safe, and clean across multiple platforms.
  • A Reading Tracker for My Son: Building a mobile app from scratch to log every book my son reads as he grows up.
  • A Custom Developer CLI: Replacing layers of sluggish enterprise cloud portals with a single streamlined command-line tool.

None of these were impossible on their own. But without leverage, the sheer time required to handle the boilerplate would have swallowed the ideas whole.

Intentionality Over Passivity

The quiet worry early on was that relying on AI might make me complacent—trading deep understanding for cheap speed.

In practice, that only happens if your usage is passive. When you approach it with clear intention, the dynamic flips.

Instead of burning energy wrestling with obscure syntax quirks or repetitive setup steps, my focus went where it mattered most: high-level architecture, performance bottlenecks, and solid system design. AI handled the mechanical groundwork; I directed the vision and ensured the pieces fit together cleanly.

The Art of Steering

Tackling large projects alongside AI is a dance of giving momentum and actively steering the direction.

Codebase mastery remains essential: if you don’t understand the fundamentals, AI can easily steer you into unnecessary complexity. But when you guide it with precision, you move with incredible speed. You learn when to let AI run, when to pause, and when to step in to keep things simple and elegant.

AI hasn’t replaced the craft of software development—it has elevated it. It lets us step back from the low-level grind and stay ruthlessly focused on solving real problems and bringing meaningful ideas to life.
